Finally fantasy golf patrons around the world have let out that big sigh of relief – Rickie Fowler finally won his 5th PGA event at the Waste Management Phoenix Championship. The 30 year old last victory was the 2017 Honda Classic – quite a break and stressful for Rickie and his fans as more is expected. The Waste Management 54 hole 4 stroke lead was almost wasted Sunday with double bogey on the front and mind boggling triple bogey (pro’s and fans will be debating rule interpretations for some time to come) on 15th to lose the lead to Brandon Grace.
But instead of checking it in, Rickie stood proud and came home in championship style and won his 5th PGA tour event. Now what? More wins and a major championship possible? I think so – this 30 year old has more talent in his left pinkie then a majority of the players on the tour. Bad luck, bad course management and his head have kept Rickie out of the winner’s circle.
But we have a new Rickie this year – he’s engaged and judging by the interaction on the 18th green – he’s loving it. Maturity and finding the right partner can be the light switch for careers in life. There is a settling effect on an individual that propels them to success. Allison Stokke, a former track and field star at the University of California and current pole vaulter is that rock of Gibraltar in Rickie’s life. Interesting that she brings her own athletic dreams to the relationship.
So looking ahead – more wins but the competitiveness at the majors is where I think you’ll see the new Rickie. I like his chances at the Masters, US Open and winning a 2nd Players in March to start off the major season. Yes, Smokin Joe’s fantasy team is smiling with PGA Champion Rickie Fowler.
